Description

RUMPELSTILTSKIN

In this popular Grimm's fairy tale, a king tells a young woman that she must spin a room full of straw into gold by morning—or die. To complete this impossible task, she is forced to promise her firstborn child to a mysterious little man in return for his gold-spinning ability. Years later, he returns to claim what is his—only to find that he has underestimated the power of a mother's love.

THE TIGER AND THE BRAHMIN

"I give you assurances," cried the Tiger to the Brahmin. "I shan't eat you if you let me out of the cage." But when the Brahmin makes a mistake of taking the Tiger at his word, he discovers that the dishonest beast intended to eat him all along. In the end, it is the wily jackal who comes to the Brahmin's aid and teaches him a lesson he had never found in his holy books. This clever, absorbing adaptation brings this beloved Indian folktale to life.

Reviews

AudioFile Magazine...
These two stories are greatly enhanced by the accompanying original music. In "The White Cat," Emma Thompson's cool, elegant voice complements a tale of princes and magical cats who are more than they appear. In a tale in which most of the characters are royalty, she gives each an appropriately aristocratic tone. The romantic and expressive music by Joe Jackson reflects the events in this leisurely paced story. In strong contrast, Robin Williams plays with accents and over-the-top jokes in "The Fool and the Flying Ship," a Russian folktale about a fool and his quirky group of friends. Williams's breathless burlesque narration goes well with the story, as does the background music provided by the Klezmer Conservatory Band. J.C.G. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine
